A dawn patrol is when balloons take off in the dark and fly until it is light enough to see landing sites. In order to fly in the dark, the balloons are fitted with special position lighting systems. By observing the dawn patrol balloons, balloonists on the ground can get an early idea of wind speeds and directions at various altitudes. Dawn patrol is the first flying event of the day. The balloons usually launch around 6am.
