The Special Shape Balloons may fly at all Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta events, but two events are for special shape balloons only. The Special Shape Rodeo began in 1989 and is held Thursday and Friday mornings. The Special Shape Glowdeo began in 1993 and is held Thursday and Friday evenings.
In 2012, over 100 special shape balloons were registered. Many of them were making their inaugural appearance at the Fiesta, including: Aaron, an Elvis balloon from Brazil (named for Elvis’ middle name); Ice Cream Cone, a chocolate cone from Kentucky; Little Fireman, a fire helmet balloon from Brazil; Little Inspector, a penguin from Brazil; Red Bird, a woodpecker from Brazil; Simba, a lion head from Belgium; and, Squirt, a fire hydrant from Brazil.
Everyone enjoys the balloons, but everyone loves the special shapes!
